Where to eat in Budapest: Complete guide for foodies
One of the things that surprised us the first time we went to Budapest was its gastronomy. We didn’t know that there was such a variety of cool and curious places to eat and that the food would be delicious. That’s why, after three times there, we would like to bring you the best places to eat in Budapest for value for money.
Some of the recommendations are also given by Chris’ brother, Sergi, who has been 5 months of Erasmus in the city and by the guide of our free tour the last time we went (January 2024), so all the places on the list have been tried by us or by people very close to us.
Finally, before we start with the list, here are some other interesting and complete posts about a trip to Budapest:

ToggleBors, fast street food in Budapest
Bors is one of the legendary places to eat in Budapest. It is a small place right next to the most famous ruin pub, the Szimpla Kert, and it is a take-away of Hungarian sandwiches and soups. The sandwiches are delicious, with mixtures of meat with sauces and other ingredients, and the soups are the typical dense Hungarian soups that bring life to you on a cold day. All in all, a super cool place to try in our opinion.

A very top place to eat in Budapest to try typical Hungarian food. It has 6 menus to choose from, with food such as Goulash (typical Hungarian soup), beef steaks, pork ribs, other broths, chicken paprika… There is also a vegetarian option.
It is a very busy place, so it is worth booking a table or queueing early. In case you need a reservation, we can give you the contact of our guide to help you, he knows them, so contact us 🙂

Frici Papa, where to eat in Budapest cheap
A dingy interior, no reservation, but a place to eat very well and at a very acceptable price in Budapest. It is also a place that serves typical Hungarian dishes at a very affordable price and we really enjoyed it. We would recommend the chicken paprika and the Rakott krumpli, a dish based on potatoes, gravy and meat.
They have quite a few tables but it fills up fast, so make sure you have plenty of time and if you only have 1-2 people in front of you in the queue, it tends to be very fast, as they go inside.

Drum Cafe, Hungarian food
More typical Hungarian restaurants where to eat in Budapest. This place is quite famous for its central location, good price and quality food. Also like the two previous ones, it offers typical Hungarian food and we liked it. In this case, to vary a bit from the previous ones, they serve a dish that you have to try in Budapest, the Langos, but anyway, we will tell you two very cool places to go to try it.
The Google rating is a bit low but we think it’s because of the unfriendly waiters 🙂

Negro Mandalica, quality Hungarian food
Negro Mandalica is probably the most expensive and highest quality restaurant we will recommend on the list, as it cost us a bit more than average, but the food was super good.
It is also a place with typical Hungarian food but a bit different. Being more elaborate, the dishes are a bit different and you can try more than the typical ones. We would recommend the cheeks, duck confit and sirloin steak.

Gozsdu Langos Bistro, where to eat in Budapest
Langos is one of the must-try dishes in the Hungarian capital. It is a bread dough fried in oil in the shape of a pizza, with whatever toppings you want to put on top. We thought it was like eating a pizza on top of a Spanish “porra” or “churro”, which we found delicious (although quite calorific). This place is a very good option to try it, as it is located in a good area of Pest near the points of interest and the truth is that it was very good value for money.

Retro Langos, the most famous one
In this list of where to eat in Budapest, we want to include a place where we could not find a table but which had been highly recommended to us. This is Retro Langos, the most famous place to eat one of the most famous Hungarian dishes. We were unlucky and the whole inside was occupied, but it is a place with a terrace, and if it’s a nice day or if you go in summer, you can enjoy it for sure.

- Opening hours: 11-24h

Bechamel, good price brunch
We were really struck by the number of brunch places in the city and that’s why we have to recommend you where to eat in Budapest a brunch. In our case, we chose to go to this place that we had near the hotel and had good reviews and it was really tasty. A brunch in general is not cheap, but this place was quite affordable and the quality was good.
We went for breakfast, so it was empty and we had a great time.

Vigado Bistro, dinner on the banks of the Danube
This place is one of the recommendations of Rafa, our free tour guide. We couldn’t go as we didn’t have enough time, but we looked around and we think it’s a place that is highly recommended, especially if, like him, you’ve been there for 7 years.
It’s a place with a daily menu of Hungarian food (goulash, chicken paprika and brownie) that costs 14€ and if you go on Rafa’s behalf you get a free beer, so if you’re interested, let us know and we’ll tell you 🙂
- Google Rating (Feb-2024): 3.9/5

The Magic, one of the TikTok virals
If you tell us a curious place to eat in Budapest, we’ll definitely recommend The Magic, the Harry Potter-inspired restaurant that we discovered because it has gone super viral on Instagram. This place is in high demand every day, so you’ll have to book if you want to go.
We recommend you go if, like us, you’re a fan of the HP movies and book, as the food is normal and they serve English breakfasts, burgers and desserts, so it’s nothing special. The place is very cool because there are a lot of details from the movies and the waiters make you do something to make you feel like a young wizard. So if you’re still waiting for the Howgarts menu, it’s a good place to go 🙂
